“Call me Ishmael, actually don’t, call me Simon, for that is what I am called. Some years ago – never mind how long precisely (but it was two years ago) – having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at work, I thought I would start drawing cartoons a little and see the watery part of my brain. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp (which it always is in Devon), drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffee houses, and looking at the rear of everyone I meet; and especially whenever my hippos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off (if people still wore hats) – then, I account it high time to get to my study (spare-room) and draw some cartoons. This is my substitute for alcohol and naughty websites. With a philosophical flourish Simon throws himself upon his mouse-mat; I quietly take to the study (again, spare-room). There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards drawing cartoons as me.”*

Enough of that.

Cutting straight to the point, using the point to do the cutting, so thereby cutting beyond the point…I am a man, who draws cartoons and illustrations and generally comes up with ideas. These are of varying quality, but with a sense of purpose. That purpose is not to take everything too seriously, and yet paradoxically, to take that very purpose, incredibly, almost obsessively seriously.

I’m based down in Devon, Totnes to be precise. It’s a good place to be based. The sea is close, as are the moors and I’m slap, bang in the middle.

Anyway, have look around the site, take your time, maybe get yourself a coffee before starting – possibly a biscuit as well – then browse such joys as: THE BLOG, ‘THE FANTASTIC ADVENTURES OF MONKEY BOY’, my CARTOON PORTFOLIO and the SHOP (where you can buy the best book in the world, ever). Feel free to CONTACT me if you so desire. I’m quite friendly given half a chance and given a whole chance, I can become uncomfortably amiable.

If you would like to get in touch about working with me: commissioning cartoons, illustration work, stories, or idea development for you or your company, please do. Do this via the CONTACT page, or alternatively, if your needs are more commercial, like logo design or marketing, go to my company site, via the following link BIG EYE DESIGN LTD.

It’s been a pleasure speaking to you, no really it has, do pop back some time.

*Any resemblance between this paragraph and the introductory paragraph of MOBY DICK, is purely coincidental. Actually that’s a lie, it’s almost a word-for-word rip-off of that wonderful text and I have just ever so slightly ruined it with my own additions. Sorry Mr Melville.
